Curcumin is the main component
of the herb turmeric. It is a vigorous antioxidant and if the increasing
body of evidence is to be believed, it is an extremely potent anti carcinogenic
agent. Curcumin is a powerful inhibitor of COX- 2 enzyme. COX-
2 enzyme or Cyclooxygenase are responsible for causing inflammation in
the cellular level. It is one of the earliest stages of cancer cell formation.
Normally it takes several years and even decade before such inflammation
develops into full fledged malignant cancer. Turmeric -curcumin seems to
kill cancer cells at this earliest stage itself. Turmeric is one of the

The chemical structure of

a large group of rats fed with turmeric- curcumin extract. Another study
on the influence of curcumin in the formation of breast cancer tumors in
rats (cancer of the mammary gland) showed positive findings. Curcumin had
inhibitory effect here. In a study on Golden Hamsters (type of rodents)
high doses of oral carcinogenic agents were applied on them. Simultaneously
turmeric- curcumin extract was fed to them. Studies showed that oral cancer
was inhibited in this group of Golden Hamsters. Researchers also
found that stomach cancer was inhibited by supplementing 1% turmeric in
rodents diet.
