| A diet rich in deep
and cold water fish like haddock, cod, salmon, tuna, halibut, mackerel
and sardines have been associated with reduced risk of cancer. It
is primarily because these types of fish contain a type of oil known as
omega 3 fatty acids. This wonderful oil is concentrated in the flesh of
cold water fish. Omega 3 fatty acid doesn't solidify until their temperature
drop to -100 degrees Fahrenheit. As a result of this the colder the water
the fish lives in the more omega 3 fatty acid it posses.
In diverse human and animals
studies it has been established beyond doubt that omega 3 fatty acids protect
mammals from cancer. It is also found to be effective in reducing
inflammatory process in conditions like psoriasis, asthma, rheumatoid arthritis
and allergies. Such chronic inflammatory conditions can lead to cancer
by increasing the production of free radicals. These free radicals in turn
damage deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) the building blocks of cells which gives
the cellular structure unique characteristic. DNA damage triggers cancerous
growth in most cases.
Omega 3 fatty acid is not
only found in the cold water fish but also in any mammals found in extreme
cold climate like polar bear, walrus etc. Eskimos who consume a lot
of these as well as cold water fish have one of the lowest incidences of
cancer in the world. Generally it has been found that incidence of cancer
like that of breast and colorectal rose with increasing consumption of
animals fat particularly red meat. But cancer rates decrease with
increasing fish and fish oil consumption. Another interesting study done
in Finland measured the fatty acid composition of breast tissue in women
with breast cancer and those with benign breast disease. It was found
that women with breast cancer had much lower levels of EPA and DHA the
components of omega 3 fatty acids. In another study in Japan it was found
that the risk of prostate cancer was higher in men who ate little or no
sea food. In many experimental studies too it was shown that omega 3 fatty
acids consistently protected against cancerous tumor formation. So what
are you waiting for? It is time you brought more of our finny friends to
your table on regular basis.
